Vargo is still convinced he can be lord of Harrenhal, but the company that he led abandons him and Gregor easily retakes the castle. When Tywin commands the recapture of Harrenhal, it is Gregor who is sent forth. Firstly, his brutal treatment of Brienne is repaid when she bites off her ear, which later becomes infected and greatly weakens him. Martin, Vargo meets his end due to the atmosphere he himself created. Without this, we'd be robbed of Jaime's growth as more than a swordsman, so fans should be thankful for this, at least. It can't be ignored that Vargo is responsible for one of the biggest character arc changes in the series when he takes Jaime Lannister's sword hand. Though devoid of morals, Vargo is not missing his wits. Vargo then heads back out into the riverlands to betray any who helped him when working for the Lannisters. Vargo jumps ship to Roose Bolton at the first opportunity, again using treachery to betray the Lannister garrison at Harrenhal. We learn quickly that he is not Tywin's, but he is a monster. Vargo serves in the narrative as yet another "monster" of Tywin Lannister through the eyes of Arya Stark.
Instead, you earn it for liking to cut the hands and feet off of those who displease you and letting them live like that. After all, you do not earn the nickname "The Crippler" for being a jolly old pal. Vargo is a sadist, a cruel man with a distinct pleasure for seeing other people in plain, like a smaller scale version of Ramsay Bolton. Vargo Hoat does nothing to discourage this. They are completely disloyal, contracts mean next to nothing to them and they are brutal and ruthless wherever they go, making them perfect company to join Gregor Clegane and Amory Lorch. The Brave Companions are essentially what everyone believes could be wrong with sellsword companies. As such, we can instantly assume that he was a cunning, treacherous man with no morals, seeing as no man would last as their leader otherwise. Vargo Hoat, the sellsword from Qohor, was the leader of the Brave Companions, or the Bloody Mummers. Another is being selected by Tywin Lannister to terrorize through the lands. One is being the top of a pile of delinquents essentially regarded as the lowest of the low throughout the realm. When looking to be confirmed as a pretty horrible guy, two achievements can really help you out.
